1. Agreement

These terms apply to the FreeUsername website and its username search (the "service"). By using the service you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use it.

2. What the service does

The service checks whether pages for a username exist on public websites, using our own search engine with its own check for every site. Results are clues from public data, not proof of identity. An account with the same username may belong to a different person, a brand, a bot or nobody. Websites change, block automated checks and return placeholder pages, so results can be wrong or incomplete. Check every result yourself.

3. Ownership and intellectual property

The service, its search engine, the list of supported sites, the detection rules, the software, the design, the text and all other content are owned by FreeUsername and protected by copyright, database and other intellectual property laws. All rights reserved. Open-source components we use stay under their own licenses (see the open-source credits). Logos and names of other websites belong to their owners.

4. Your license to use the website

We give you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license to use the website through a normal web browser for your own lawful purposes. We reserve every right not expressly granted in these terms.

5. Acceptable use

  • Use the service lawfully, and only for usernames you have a legitimate reason to research.
  • Do not use it to stalk, harass, threaten, dox or discriminate against anyone, or for unlawful surveillance.
  • We are not a consumer reporting agency. Do not use results for decisions about credit, employment, housing, insurance or any purpose covered by the FCRA or similar laws.
  • Use the breach search, carrier lookup and other email and phone checks only for email addresses and phone numbers you own or are authorised to check. These email and phone checks are not live yet; this rule applies once they launch.

Do not use results to build profiles of people without a lawful basis. Reporting abuse: if you think someone is using the service to stalk, harass or dox a person, email [email protected] with what happened and any links. We review every report and can block access.

6. Prohibited conduct

You must not, and must not help anyone else to:

  • scrape or crawl the service, or send automated queries through bots, scripts or other tools;
  • copy, republish, sell or resell results, the site list, the detection rules or other content of the service;
  • reverse engineer, decompile or extract the engine, the site list or the detection rules, except where the law expressly allows it;
  • use the service or its output to build or improve a competing service or database;
  • get around rate limits, Cloudflare Turnstile or any other security or access control;
  • overload the service or use it to attack the websites it checks;
  • use results to harass, stalk, threaten or expose anyone.

7. API and automated access

Access through an API or any automated means is allowed only with our prior written permission and an API key we issue. To ask, email [email protected].

8. Trademarks

FreeUsername, its name and its logo are trademarks of FreeUsername. You may not use them without our written permission. Other names and logos shown on the service are trademarks of their owners and appear only to identify each website.

9. Independence

The service is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the WhatsMyName, Sherlock or Maigret projects, or by any website it checks.

10. Copyright complaints

If you believe something on the service infringes your copyright, email [email protected] with: the work you say is infringed, where it appears on the service (the URL), your contact details, a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised, a statement that your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner, and your physical or electronic signature. We review every notice and remove material where appropriate.

11. Termination

We may suspend or block your access at any time if you break these terms or misuse the service. The sections on ownership, prohibited conduct, disclaimer, liability, indemnity and governing law continue to apply after that.

12. Disclaimer

The service is free and provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We may change, limit or stop it at any time. Rate limits apply.

13. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, FreeUsername is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, lost profits or data, or for decisions made based on results. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

14. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold FreeUsername harmless from claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) that arise from your misuse of the service or your breach of these terms.

15. Other websites

Results link to websites we do not control. Their content and terms are their own.

16. Governing law

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the country in which FreeUsername is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

Disputes. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the service will first be raised by email to [email protected] so we can try to resolve it informally within 30 days. If it is not resolved, it will be finally settled by arbitration under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules by a single arbitrator, conducted online in English, unless the parties agree otherwise.

Exceptions. Either party may bring an individual claim in a small-claims court, and we may seek urgent injunctive relief in any competent court to stop infringement of our intellectual property or misuse of the service.

Your rights as a consumer. Nothing in these Terms removes rights you have under mandatory consumer protection laws of the country where you live.
