Version 0.0.1: the new FreeUsername website
Released: 30 October 2026 (this release)
This is the first full release of the new FreeUsername website. Everything before it, including the site at whatsmynameapps.us, was a beta test. Pages move from the old domain to freeusername.com over a few days, at the same addresses.
- Username search runs on the FreeUsername™ engine, which uses site data from the WhatsMyName project by Micah Hoffman, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, together with data from Sherlock and Maigret. The engine adds more sites we verify ourselves, 3,450+ in all.
- For 9 sites, including TikTok, X, Kick, GitHub and Bluesky, the check runs from your own browser first, with our server as the fallback.
- The Discord checker asks Discord’s own sign-up username check, so a taken name shows as taken even when the profile is private.
- Results stream in as each site answers, with the best-known sites first. Sites that fail our nightly checks are hidden until they work again.
- The Android app uses the same open data, credited on its open-source page.
FreeUsername is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the WhatsMyName, Sherlock or Maigret projects. Thank you to their maintainers and contributors.
