Online dating safety: is your match a real person?

Before you meet someone from a dating app, it is reasonable to check that they are who they say they are. If a match has shared a username for Instagram, a gaming network or another social site, a search across 3,450+ sites can show whether that name has a consistent public history, or details that don’t add up. It can’t prove who someone is: scammers reuse real photos and build linked profiles, and real people often have little public presence. Use it to spot inconsistencies, then verify with a video call. Don't use it to dig into their life.

Free, no sign-up. Up to five usernames, 3,450+ sites. The username is not stored or logged.

The problem: fake profiles and romance scams

Romance scammers create fake profiles on dating apps and social media, build trust over days or weeks, then ask for money. The US Federal Trade Commission's guidance lists common stories: they can't meet because they work abroad, on an oil rig or in the military, and they need help with a medical bill, a plane ticket or a "great" crypto investment. They push for payment by wire transfer, gift cards, payment apps or cryptocurrency because that money is hard to get back.

A fake profile often has a thin trail. The photos are borrowed, the handle was created recently, and nothing else online matches the life they describe.

How a username search helps

If your match gives you a handle, enter it and the tool checks it on 3,450+ sites. Each site comes back as Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown. Treat every one of them as a lead to verify, not a verdict. Found results show public profile details where the site provides them, such as display name, avatar and bio, so you can see whether the photos and story line up across accounts. A real person usually has some consistency: the same face, a similar bio, friends who interact with them.

The search only sees public profiles under the exact handle. It doesn't reveal private information, real names, addresses or messages, and that limit is deliberate.

Step by step

  1. Use only what your match shared. Search the username your match gave you or shows on their profile. Do not guess other handles to find accounts they did not share.
  2. Compare photos and story. Open the Found profiles and check that photos, location and job match what they told you. A reverse image search of a profile photo can show whether it belongs to someone else.
  3. Treat a thin trail as a question, not proof. Many real people have few public accounts. If nothing matches, ask for a short video call before meeting.
  4. Watch for money requests. If the match asks for money, gift cards, crypto or help with an investment, stop. The FTC advice is never to send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person.
  5. Report and block if it is a scam. Report the profile to the dating app and report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you already paid, contact your bank or the payment company right away.

Safety tips for the first meeting

  • Meet in a public place and arrange your own transport.
  • Tell a friend where you will be and who you are meeting.
  • Keep chatting inside the app until you are comfortable; scammers often push to move to text or another messenger quickly.
  • Talk to someone you trust if things feel off. Friends often spot red flags first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find someone's dating profile with this tool?

The tool checks usernames on public sites, but this page is about checking a match you are already talking to for inconsistencies. Do not use it to find or watch someone who has not shared their handle with you.

What are signs a match might be a romance scammer?

Per FTC guidance: they cannot meet in person, they tell you how to pay, and they ask for money through wire transfers, gift cards, payment apps or cryptocurrency, often with an urgent story.

My match has no other accounts. Is that a red flag?

Not by itself. Plenty of people keep a small online presence. Ask for a video call, and be cautious if they keep finding reasons to avoid one.

Does my match find out I searched their username?

No. The tool does not contact anyone, and the username is not stored or logged on our side.

Where do I report a romance scam?

Report it to the dating app and to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you sent money, contact your bank or the payment company immediately.
