WhatsMyName Apps Is Now FreeUsername: Our Rebrand

WhatsMyName Apps now goes by FreeUsername, and the site lives at freeusername.com. If you followed an old link or bookmark, it brought you here automatically. Nothing else needs to change on your side.

Why we changed the name

Our old name sounded a lot like WhatsMyName, the open-source project whose data is one of our sources. Some visitors thought we were that project. We aren't, and the project's maintainer asked us to pick a name of our own. He was right, so we did.

FreeUsername also says what most people come here for: finding out whether a username is free, and finding one that is.

What stays the same

• The username search across 3,450+ sites, still free and with no sign-up.
• The name checker, username generator, digital footprint check and OSINT tools.
• The Android app, now called FreeUsername.
• All blog posts and guides, at the same paths on the new domain.

Do old links still work?

Yes. Every address on whatsmynameapps.us forwards to the same page here. A link to an old guide opens that guide, and a link to a platform checker opens that checker. Updating your bookmarks is a good idea, but you don't have to.

Data sources

Our search uses open data from several projects. Username data comes in part from the WhatsMyName project, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, along with Sherlock and Maigret. FreeUsername is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of these projects.

What's next

We're working on more OSINT tools and on data breach exposure checks. New features will show up here first. Questions about the move? Write to [email protected].
