Discord Username Lookup (No ID Needed)

Free, no sign-up. Checks 3,450+ sites; the username is not stored or logged.
Discord is not built like most social networks. There is no public profile page you can open in a browser, and no directory of users to scroll through. If you want to find someone on Discord, you need their username, or you need to share a server with them. That is deliberate, and it is the reason the methods below are short.
This guide covers the ways Discord itself gives you to find a person, and how usernames work since Discord moved to unique names.
What our checker does for Discord: it asks Discord’s own sign-up check whether a username is taken. It can’t show a profile, a display name or who owns the account, because Discord has no public profile pages. To find a person, use the Discord steps below.
How Discord usernames work now
For years, Discord accounts had a name plus a four-digit tag, like Mia#4821. Thousands of people could share the name "Mia" because the number told them apart. In 2023 Discord replaced that system with unique usernames. Each username now belongs to one account only, and the tag is gone.
Every account now has two names, and they do different jobs:
| Username | Display name | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | mia.codes | Mia |
| Unique? | Yes, one account per name | No, anyone can use any display name |
| Format | Lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores | Most characters, including emoji |
| Used for | Adding friends, identifying the account | What people see in chats |
| Changing it | Limited (Discord allows up to 2 changes per week) | Any time |
This matters when you search. The name you see in a chat is usually the display name, and display names are not unique. To add someone you need the username. On desktop you can see it by clicking the person's name or avatar to open their profile card; the username sits under the display name. Servers can also give members a server nickname, which is a third name that only shows inside that server.
The full rules for usernames, including length and allowed characters, are on our Discord username checker page, taken from Discord's support article on usernames and display names.
Method 1: Add Friend with the exact username
This is the main way to find someone on Discord, and the one Discord documents in how do I add friends on Discord.
On desktop or in a browser:
- Click the Discord logo in the top-left corner.
- Open the Friends tab and click Add Friend.
- Type or paste the username.
- Click Send Friend Request. It will appear under Pending until the other person responds.
On mobile, tap the chat bubble in the top-left corner, then Add Friends, then Add by Username, and send the request from there.
Discord's help article is blunt about one thing: the username has to be exact or the request will not go through. There is no fuzzy matching and no list of suggestions. If it fails, check these:
- You typed the display name instead of the username. Ask for the username specifically.
- A period or underscore is missing or in the wrong place.
mia.codesandmia_codesare different accounts. - The person changed their username since they told you.
- Their privacy settings only accept friend requests from certain people, such as friends of friends or server members. In that case, meeting in a shared server first may be the only route.
Method 2: Find them through a server you share
If you are both in the same server, you do not need to type anything. Open the server's member list, or click their name on a message they posted, to open their profile card. From there you can send a friend request or a direct message, depending on their settings. Discord's add-friends article lists server member lists and profiles as ways to send requests, alongside usernames.
A full profile also lists mutual servers and mutual friends, which helps you confirm you have the right person before you start a conversation.
Method 3: Use links they share themselves
Many people put their Discord username on other profiles: a Twitch panel, a YouTube channel's about section, a GitHub bio, a game forum signature. Creators often share a server invite link instead, so fans can join their community. If someone has published their Discord details on purpose, that is the cleanest way to find them. Copy the username exactly and use Add Friend.
If you know their handle from another platform but not their Discord name, the FreeUsername username search checks one handle across 3,450+ sites, which can turn up a public profile where they list their Discord. It is free and needs no sign-up. Our tool does not read Discord profiles, because there are none to read. The Discord check on the checker page only tells you whether a username is taken.
Discord ID lookup: how to get a Discord user ID
If someone asks for your ID, or you need theirs for a bot or a report, turn on Developer Mode in User Settings under Advanced. Then right-click a profile (or long-press on mobile) and choose Copy User ID. That is the only reliable way to find a Discord ID, and it works only on accounts you can already see.
Discord has no public search that turns an ID into a username. You can paste discord.com/users/ followed by the ID into Discord to open that profile. Our tool cannot do a Discord ID lookup at all. It works from usernames, so it can tell you whether a Discord-style handle is also used on other sites.
What does not work, and what to avoid
Discord has no search bar for finding strangers across the whole platform. Server search only covers messages and members inside servers you belong to.
You will see websites that claim to look up any Discord user. Be careful with them. Many ask you to log in with your Discord account, which can hand a stranger access to your messages, and Discord's rules forbid self-bots and scraping. If a site asks for your password or token, close it.
The honest answer is that if someone has not shared their username with you and you are not in a server together, Discord is designed so that you cannot find them. That protects you too.

Checking your own username
If you are picking a new Discord name, test it before you change it. Under the unique-name system, short and popular names go quickly. Run your preferred handle through our name checker to see whether you can use the same one on other platforms too, and read our tips on choosing a unique username.
