A Discord pfp (profile picture) is the round avatar shown next to your name across Discord. It is the thing people see most. It sits next to every message, in every member list and on every friend request. A good one is easy to spot at small sizes and still looks right when someone opens your full profile.
Key takeaways
- Avatar: a square PNG or JPG, at least about 200x200 px and under 10 MB. Discord crops it to a circle.
- Banner: at least 680x240 px and under 10 MB. Uploading any banner, static or GIF, needs Nitro.
- Without Nitro you still get a banner color, a display name, pronouns and an About Me.
- Save avatars through Discord in a browser. Do not give a third-party pfp grabber your login.
This guide covers the sizes Discord actually documents, what needs Nitro, ideas for a cute, funny or cool pfp, and how to set up a banner and bio that fit together. We checked each spec against Discord's help center in October 2026. Discord changes profile features often, so where its own pages disagree, we say so.
How we checked (October 2026): we compared each size and Nitro rule here with Discord's Custom Profiles help article, its profile tips blog post and its developer reference. We did not run our own upload tests.
Discord pfp size and file rules
Discord's Custom Profiles article lists PNG and GIF as supported avatar types, and animated GIF avatars are a Nitro perk. Discord's profile tips post adds JPG and gives the practical numbers: around 200x200 pixels at minimum, and under 10 MB.
| Item | What Discord says | Nitro needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar (static) | PNG or JPG, about 200x200 px minimum, under 10 MB, cropped to a circle | No |
| Avatar (animated) | GIF | Yes |
| Profile banner | PNG, JPG or animated GIF, under 10 MB, minimum 680x240 px | Yes, for any uploaded banner |
| Banner color | Solid color picked in settings | No |
| Profile theme colors | Primary and accent color | Yes |
| Per-server avatar | A different avatar in one server | Yes |
The 200x200 figure is a floor, not a target. Discord's servers can serve avatars at up to 4096 pixels (its developer reference allows sizes in powers of two from 16 to 4096), so a sharper source image pays off when someone opens your profile on a large screen. A square image of 512x512 or 1024x1024 is a sensible choice. It stays well under the file limit as a PNG.
Whatever Discord picture you choose, remember it is shown as a circle: anything in the corners of your square gets cut off. Keep faces, letters and logos in the middle.
The perfect Discord banner size
Here Discord's own pages disagree. The Custom Profiles help article says the minimum is 680x240 pixels. The older profile tips blog post says 600x240. Go with the help article: if your image is at least 680x240, it meets both.
Use an image of at least 680x240 pixels, and larger if you can. There is no single perfect Discord banner size, because the banner is shown at different widths on desktop, in the browser and on phones. What works in practice:
- Make it wider than the minimum, such as 1360x480, which keeps the same shape at twice the size.
- Leave the lower-left area plain. Your avatar overlaps that part of the banner, so text placed there gets covered.
- After you upload, Discord shows a crop window. Use it rather than skipping, or Discord crops with default settings.
Discord banners that are uploaded images need Nitro. Everyone else gets a banner color, and Discord's design tips suggest picking one that matches or contrasts with your avatar.
Animated pfps, Discord banner GIFs and GIF tips
A Discord banner GIF and an animated avatar both need Nitro. The 10 MB limit is where most GIF uploads fail. If yours is rejected:
- Trim the loop. Two or three seconds is plenty for a profile.
- Cut the frame rate or the number of colors in your editor.
- Resize to the dimensions you actually need instead of uploading a full HD clip.
When you look for gifs for Discord, check where they come from. Clips from shows and games are usually someone else's copyrighted work. Making your own loop, or using art with a clear license, avoids takedown problems and looks more personal anyway.
Discord profile picture ideas
The best Discord profile pictures share a few traits: they read at the size of a fingernail, they have one clear subject, and they still make sense as a circle. Beyond that, it is about the impression you want to give. Some Discord profile picture ideas, grouped by mood:
Cute Discord pfp ideas
- A photo or drawing of your pet, cropped tight on the face.
- A small character on a pastel background, such as a frog, a cat or a cloud with a face.
- Food art: one dumpling, one strawberry, one cup of coffee, centered.
Funny Discord pfp ideas
- A badly drawn self-portrait in MS Paint style. It is recognizable and clearly yours.
- A deliberately dramatic photo of something ordinary, such as a chair lit like a movie poster.
- An inside joke from your main server, if your friends will get it.
Cool Discord profile pictures
- A bold single-letter monogram in a strong color.
- A silhouette or high-contrast photo with a dark background.
- Pixel art of your favorite game character. Pixel art scales down well.
Good Discord profile pictures also avoid a few things: busy group photos, thin text that disappears at small sizes, and anything that would get you reported in a server with strict rules. A good Discord pfp should also not include personal details like your school logo or your face if you want to stay anonymous.
Using a Discord pfp maker
Any editor that exports a square PNG will do. A Discord pfp maker is any tool that helps you build a square avatar: a general image editor, a free online design tool, an avatar builder in a game, or a drawing app. You do not need a dedicated tool. What matters is the output:
- Set the canvas to a square, such as 1024x1024.
- Place your subject in the center, leaving space around the edges for the circle crop.
- Export as a Discord PNG (a plain PNG file works). PNG keeps edges sharp, and transparent areas show the background behind your avatar.
- Upload it under User Settings, then Profiles, then Change Avatar, and press Apply and Save Changes.
Be careful with tools that ask you to sign in with Discord before they will make anything. A picture editor does not need access to your account.
Discord pfp download: saving an avatar the safe way
People search for a Discord pfp download or a Discord pfp grabber when they want to save someone's avatar, usually their own old one or a friend's art. You do not need a third-party grabber for this, and you should not give one your account details.
The legitimate route uses Discord and your browser:
- Open Discord in a web browser and log in.
- Open the person's profile from a server you share or your friends list.
- Right-click the avatar and choose your browser's option to open the image in a new tab.
- The address will end in a size setting. You can change it to a larger power of two, such as 1024, to get a sharper copy, up to the size the person uploaded.
For your own past avatars, Discord keeps a Recent Avatars section under Change Avatar, so you can reuse one without downloading anything.
Saving someone's picture does not make it yours. Do not reuse another person's avatar or art as your own, and never use it to impersonate them. Discord treats impersonation as a reportable offense.
Discord profile ideas beyond the picture
Beyond the picture you can set a display name, About Me, pronouns and, with purchases or Nitro, extra cosmetics. A cool Discord profile is more than an avatar. Discord gives you several other pieces to work with:
- Display name. Separate from your unique username, and you can change it any time. Our Discord username guide explains the difference.
- About Me. Up to 190 characters, including emoji, markdown and links.
- Pronouns. An optional short field.
- Avatar decorations and profile effects. Cosmetic frames and animations bought from Discord's Shop.
- Profile widgets. Lists of favorite and recently played games, currently shown on desktop and browser only.
Say your handle is nightowl92. You could use a small owl on a dark navy square as the avatar, a navy banner color (no Nitro needed), and an About Me that reads "night shift gamer, DMs friends only". Every piece points back to the name, and none of it gives away your real name or city.
A simple way to plan your Discord profile ideas: pick two colors, then make the avatar, banner (or banner color) and theme colors all come from those two.
A bio template for Discord
With 190 characters, the About Me fills up fast. Here is a bio template Discord's limit can hold:
name / pronouns
what I play or make: ___
timezone: ___
DMs: open / friends only
"short quote or joke"
Keep personal details out: no full name, school, age or city. Anyone who shares a server with you can open your profile.
Discord icons, PNGs and the dark gray background
Searches for Discord icons and Discord PNG files usually come from people making server graphics or thumbnails. If you want to use Discord's own logo, look for Discord's official branding page and follow its rules. Do not alter the logo or suggest Discord endorses your project.
If you design a pfp, check it against the background people will see. Discord's help center lists Light, Ash, Dark and Onyx themes on desktop, and Light, Dark and Midnight on mobile. Many people search for the exact Discord dark gray hex value, but Discord does not publish its theme colors in the help center, and the shades changed with its theme update. Rather than trust a hex code copied from a fan site, take a screenshot of Discord in the theme you use and pick the color with an eyedropper tool. Then preview your avatar on that color and on white.
Match your pfp with your username
Pick the username first, then build the picture around it. A new look is a good moment to sort out your name too. If you are picking a new Discord username, run it through the Discord username checker for the rules, then use the FreeUsername username search to see whether the same handle is free on 3,450+ other sites. It is free and needs no sign-up. Our tips on choosing a unique username help if your first choice is gone.
