Server tags turned a small part of Discord into a status symbol. A four-letter tag next to someone's name tells everyone which community they belong to, and clicking it opens that server's profile. That has made tags, server names and logos something people put real thought into.
Key takeaways
- A server tag is a label of up to 4 characters plus a badge, unlocked with 3 Server Boosts.
- Tags are not unique. The badge and color tell servers apart.
- Most profile badges cannot be hidden. The Legacy Username badge and your server tag can be removed.
- Discord says the HypeSquad badge cannot be removed at the moment.
This guide explains how tags work according to Discord's help center, gives ideas for tags and server names, and answers the badge questions that come up most: what the "meow" tag is, whether you can hide badges, and how to get rid of a HypeSquad badge.
How we checked (October 2026): we read the Discord help center articles linked in each section and compared their steps and limits with this guide. We did not test Medal's settings.
What Discord server tags are
According to Discord's Server Tags article, a tag is a custom label of up to 4 characters paired with an icon. The key rules:
- Tags use letters, numbers and certain special characters. Spaces and emoji are not supported.
- Tags are not unique. Two servers can use the same four letters. The badge and color are what tell them apart.
- Each server has one tag at a time, and each member can display one tag at a time.
- An applied tag shows next to the member's name everywhere on Discord: chat, member lists and DM lists.
- The server sets the color. Members cannot recolor it.
- There is currently no way to limit which members can wear the tag.
Tags grew out of Discord's earlier Guilds experiment, which also had 4-character tags. Discord's Guilds FAQ now says that experiment has closed.
How to make a server tag
You make a tag in Server Settings, after spending 3 boosts on the Server Tag perk. You need to be the server owner or an admin, and you need to be on desktop. Discord says these extra perks can only be bought and configured there.
- Open your server and go to the Server Boosts tab in the upper-left corner. Only owners and admins can see it.
- Check that you have 3 available boosts. These are separate from boosts that count toward your Boost Level, so you may need to move some or ask members to boost.
- Hover over the Server Tag perk and press Enable Perk.
- Open Server Settings, then Server Tag. Set the tag text, pick a badge and choose a color.
Things to know before you commit:
- If you change the tag later, every member has to reapply it. Discord also rate-limits how often you can change it.
- If the server drops below the boosts the perk needs, the tag is removed from members' profiles.
- Extra badge packs cost more boosts: Creepy Crawlies (2), Pet (3), Plant (3) and Flex (5). You can only use one badge at a time.
Members add the tag under User Settings, then Profiles, then Server Tag, and press Select. On mobile, they tap their avatar, then Edit Profile, and scroll to Server Tags. To remove it, press the X next to the tag.
Ideas for the coolest Discord server tags
The best tags are short real words, initials or game shorthand that read at a glance. Lists of the coolest Discord server tags change by the week, and nobody publishes reliable numbers on which tags are most worn. What makes a tag work is easier to pin down. With only 4 characters, it has to be instantly readable.
- Short words. MEOW, VIBE, CHILL, LOFI, ZEN. Real words read at a glance.
- Abbreviations. The initials of your server, such as NSC for a "Night Shift Club".
- Game shorthand. GG, AFK, RNG, NPC, XP. Players recognize them immediately.
- Mood tags. SAD, GLOW, COZY, LOUD. They work as a joke and as an identity.
As for numbers to use for Discord tags, numbers are allowed, and short ones can make a common word yours: a tag like 404 or a server's founding year. Avoid numbers that reveal personal details, such as your birth year.
Because tags are not unique, check what else is out there before you settle. If a popular server already uses your four letters, a distinct badge and color matter more.
What is the meow badge on Discord?
"Meow badge Discord" searches are about the MEOW server tag. It spread quickly because it is short, cute and easy to read at a glance. It is not an official Discord badge with special meaning. It is a server tag like any other, so the way to get it is to join a server that uses MEOW as its tag and apply it in your profile settings.
Because tags are not unique, many unrelated servers use MEOW. If you want one with a cat-style icon for your own server, the Pet Badge Pack is the likeliest place to look. Discord's article names the pack but does not list every icon in it, so check the pack in your Server Boosts tab before spending boosts.
Discord server names that work
Good Discord server names do the same job as a good username: easy to say, easy to search and clear about what the server is for. Some patterns that work:
- Topic plus a twist. "Pixel Kitchen" for food photography, "Late Night Lobby" for evening gaming.
- Place words. Lounge, Café, Den, Hideout, Station, Hub.
- Inside jokes. Fine for a friends-only server, confusing for a public one.
If you want your server listed in Discord's Discover tab, Discord's Discovery guidelines ask for a name and description that describe the server accurately and contain no profanity. Pick a name you can also use as a tag abbreviation. "Night Shift Club" becomes NSC.
A worked example: say you run a late-night study server. "Night Owl Study" is clear and easy to search. Its initials give the tag NOS, or you could use the real word OWLS. Because tags are not unique, pick a badge and color that other OWLS servers are unlikely to share. Before you put the name on a banner, search nightowlstudy as a handle to see whether matching social accounts are free.
If the server is for a brand or creator, check that the name is free as a handle elsewhere before you print it on anything. The FreeUsername username search checks one name across 3,450+ sites for free.
Making a Discord server logo
A good server logo is a simple, centered square image that still reads as a small circle. Your Discord server logo (the server icon) shows as a small circle in everyone's server list. The same rules as a profile picture apply:
- Use a square image and keep the subject centered, because the corners get cut.
- One symbol or two letters beats a detailed illustration.
- Use strong contrast. Test it on Discord's light and dark themes.
- Make it large enough to stay sharp, such as 512x512 or bigger. Discord's help center does not publish an official icon size, so this is our advice rather than a rule.
Match the logo to your tag. If your tag badge is green, a green logo makes the connection obvious when someone opens your server profile.
How to hide Discord badges
Discord's Profile Badges 101 article is clear that most badges cannot be hidden. There is no general switch to hide Discord badges. Here is what each one allows:
| Badge | Can you hide it? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy Username | Yes | User Settings, then Profiles, Legacy Username Badge toggle. On mobile, Edit Profile. |
| Server tag | Yes | Press the X next to the tag in your profile settings. |
| Nitro, Server Booster | No toggle | They follow your subscription and boosting. |
| Quest | No | Discord says it cannot be removed at the moment. |
| Orbs | No | Cannot be removed once bought. |
| HypeSquad House | No | See the next section. |
How to remove the HypeSquad badge on Discord
If you searched "how to remove HypeSquad badge Discord", the answer from Discord's help center is that you currently cannot. The HypeSquad House badges came from an in-app quiz that sorted you into a house. Discord says the quiz is no longer available and that it is not possible to remove the badge from your profile. The HypeSquad Events badge is listed as no longer obtainable.
Older guides tell you to leave your house in the HypeSquad settings. That option depended on the old program, and we could not confirm it still exists, so treat it as unreliable.
Game collection on your Discord profile
The game collection Discord shows on some profiles comes from Profile Widgets, described in Discord's Profile Widgets FAQ. You can add a Favorite Game, Currently Playing (up to 5 games), Want to Play (up to 20) and Games I've Played (up to 20), plus Game Stats for a few supported games.
To add one, go to User Settings, then Profiles, scroll to Profile Widgets and press Add Widgets. Widgets currently show on desktop and browser only, not on mobile. They are curated by hand and do not update from what you are playing.
Why your status shows playing Medal on Discord
Your status shows Medal because Discord detects programs running on your computer and can show them as your activity status. Medal, the game clip recording app, runs in the background while you play, so Discord often picks it up and shows "Playing Medal" instead of the game you are actually in.
To fix it, open User Settings and find Activity Privacy. You can turn off sharing your detected activity there. You can also close Medal when you are not recording, or look in Medal's own settings for its Discord status option. We have not tested Medal's current menus, so the exact label may differ.
Your username is part of the look
A tag sits right next to your display name, and your unique username is what people use to add you. If you are rethinking all three, see our Discord username guide, test a new name on the Discord checker page, and read our Discord pfp guide for sizes and banner rules.
