Podcast Name Availability: How to Check a Show Name

You have a podcast name you love. Before you record the trailer, order cover art or tell anyone, check that the name is actually free. A podcast name lives in a lot of places at once: the podcast apps, your social handles, your website and, if it takes off, trademark records. A clash in any of them can force a rename after you have built an audience.
Podcast name availability means the name is not already used by a similar show, the matching social handles and domain are free, and no live trademark covers it.
Key takeaways
- Apple Podcasts and Spotify allow duplicate titles, so "accepted" does not mean "available".
- Check four things: podcast apps, social handles, domains and trademarks.
- A username search covers handles and domains in one step. Apps and trademarks need a manual check.
- Claim the handles and domain the same day the name passes.
This guide covers each check in the order that saves you the most time.
| Check | Where | Can our search do it? |
|---|---|---|
| Other shows | Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts | No, search by hand |
| Social handles | Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Threads and more | Yes for most sites. Instagram and Threads need a manual check. |
| Domain | .com, .net, .org, .io, .us, .app, .dev | Yes |
| Trademark | USPTO trademark search (US) | No, search by hand |
Podcast names are not unique (and that is the trap)
Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not reserve show names. Two shows can have the same title, and many do. So "the name isn't blocked when I submit" does not mean the name is available in any useful sense. If a popular show already uses it, listeners searching for you will find them first, and the older show may have trademark rights.
That is why podcast name availability is really four questions:
- Is another show already using this name, or something close?
- Are the social handles free?
- Is a matching domain free?
- Has anyone registered it as a trademark?
1. Search the podcast apps
Start by searching the podcast apps for the same or a similar show name. Search the exact name, in quotes where the app allows it, in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and Pocket Casts. Then search close variants: with and without "the", "podcast" or "show" on the end, singular and plural, and common misspellings.
What you are looking for:
- An active show with the same name: pick another name. You will compete with it in search forever.
- An old, inactive show with the same name: lower risk, but it can still confuse listeners and it still shows up in results.
- A similar name in the same topic: this is where trademark trouble usually starts. A cooking show called "Kitchen Table Talk" next to another cooking show called "Kitchen Table Talks" is a problem in a way that a sports show with the same name might not be.
Keep the title itself clean. Podcast hosting guides report that Apple can reject or remove shows whose titles are stuffed with keywords to game search, so use a real name and put the description of the show in the description.
2. Check the social handles
Check the handles with one username search, then confirm the big ones by hand. Your listeners will look for you on Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube and Threads, and your guests will tag you. Ideally you get the same handle on all of them. Running the name through a username search checks 3,450+ sites in one go, so you can see in a minute where the handle is taken, where it looks free and where you need a variant. Instagram and Threads aren't checked automatically, so open instagram.com/yourshow and threads.net/@yourshow yourself.
Say your show is called Night Owl Notes. Search nightowlnotes on our home page. The results list each site as Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown, and show whether nightowlnotes.com and the other domains are registered. If TikTok comes back Found, try nightowlnotespod next and compare. Then search "Night Owl Notes" in Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and in the USPTO search, before you buy anything.
If the bare name is taken on the big platforms, common podcast patterns are:
- @nameshow or @namepod
- @namepodcast (long, but clear)
- @listentoname or @thenamepod
Pick one pattern and use it everywhere. A consistent variant is easier to remember than a perfect handle on one site and a different one on the next. Our name checker helps compare a few spellings side by side.
3. Check the domain
A website gives the show a home you control, a place for show notes and an address that works when you say it out loud on air. The same search on our home page also checks .com, .net, .org, .io, .us, .app and .dev through public registry data, so you see domains next to handles. Our domain name search guide explains what "available" means there.
Say the domain aloud before you buy it. If you have to spell it on every episode ("that's kitchen, then the number 2, then table"), keep looking.
4. Check trademark records
This is the check most new podcasters skip and the one that causes forced renames. In the US, search the name in the USPTO's free trademark search. Look for live marks with the same or a similar name for entertainment or media.
Podcasts are commonly registered as entertainment services in Class 41, and sometimes in Class 9 for downloadable episodes. A registered mark in those classes with a similar name is a real warning sign. If you plan to build a business around the show, or you find something close, talk to a trademark attorney before launch. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
Outside the US, check the trademark office for the countries where most of your listeners are.
A quick podcast name checklist
- No active show with the same or a confusingly similar name in your topic.
- Handles free, or one consistent variant free, on the platforms your listeners use.
- A domain you can say on air without spelling it.
- No live trademark that looks close in entertainment or media classes.
- The name is easy to say, spell and search after hearing it once.
When everything passes, claim the handles and the domain the same day. A name that looks free today can be taken tomorrow, and squatters watch new launches. Our post on username squatting explains why speed matters, and reserving a username before launch covers the claiming step.
Frequently asked questions
Can two podcasts have the same name?
Yes. Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not stop duplicate titles. That makes it legal to submit, but it can still lead to listener confusion or a trademark dispute if the other show was first and is in the same area.
Do I need to trademark my podcast name?
Not to launch. Many shows never register a mark. It becomes worth considering once the show is a business, has sponsors or sells merchandise. Checking that you are not infringing someone else's mark matters from day one.
Is there one tool that checks a podcast name everywhere?
No single tool covers the podcast apps, social handles, domains and trademarks together. A username search handles the handles and domains in one step; the podcast apps and the trademark search need a quick manual check.
