Username Availability Search: Is It Taken Everywhere?
By David James · Published · Updated · 4 min read · Editorial policy
Free, no sign-up. Checks 3,450+ sites; the username is not stored or logged.
You found a name you like. Before you print it on a logo or a channel banner, you want to know if it is free. A username taken checker answers that in a minute instead of an afternoon of signing up on every site. This post shows how a username search works, how to read the results, and what to do when your first choice is gone.
A username availability search checks many websites at once to see whether a profile already exists at a given name.
Key takeaways
- Our search checks 3,450+ sites and marks each result Found, Not found, Unknown or Blocked.
- "Not found" usually means free, but reserved and recently deleted names can still be blocked.
- Instagram and Threads are not checked automatically; check them by hand.
- Confirm on each platform's own sign-up or rename screen before you commit.
How a username availability search works
It works by asking each site whether a profile exists at the name you typed. Most sites put each profile at a fixed address, like site.com/name. Our search, powered by our own FreeUsername™ search engine, asks each site whether a profile exists at that address. If there is one, the name is taken there. If not, it is likely free. Results stream in live as sites answer. You can check up to five names at once, and nothing you type is stored.
Searching "username serach" or "username searxh"? You're in the right place, and the steps are the same.
Quick search vs Full search
Quick search checks popular sites fast; Full search checks every site we support.
| Quick search | Full search | |
|---|---|---|
| Sites | About 1,060 popular sites | All 3,450+ sites |
| Best for | A first look at big platforms | Brands and final checks |
| Export | JSON, CSV | JSON, CSV |
How to read the results
Each site gets a result, and only "Found" is a firm answer.
- Found: a profile exists. The name is taken on that site.
- Not found: no profile at that address. Usually free, but some sites reserve names or ban words.
- Unknown or Blocked: the site didn't give a clear answer. Open it by hand. Some platforms are checked from your browser to help with this.
"Not found" doesn't always mean you can register it. Deleted accounts can hold a name for a while. Our post on what to do when a username has been taken covers this.
Worked example
Say you want nightowl92 for a new channel. Type it into the search and run Quick search. Suppose it comes back Found on a few sites, Not found on most, and Blocked on one. Open the Found profiles to see if they are active, and open the Blocked site by hand. Then check Instagram and Threads yourself, since we only give a manual guide for those. If the sites you care about are clear, run Full search, export the CSV, and register the name on those sites the same day.
Finding available usernames
When your first pick is taken, small changes usually find a free one. Try add a word (getname, namehq), a short suffix, or drop a vowel. For a stream of fresh ideas, try FreeUsername.com, our own project for finding free names. Our guide on choosing a unique username has more tips.
For a brand, also check the domain. Our domain name availability guide explains how, and the search includes a domain check.
How we compare with Instant Username Search
The main differences are site count, live results and export. Instant Username Search is a well-known checker for popular sites. Our search is free with no sign-up, covers 3,450+ sites, streams results live, exports JSON and CSV, and works in 10 languages. We wrote a fuller comparison in our tool vs Namechk vs Instant Username Search.
Check from your phone
Yes, you can check from a phone. The Android app FreeUsername: Username Checker checks a name everywhere and suggests free ones. For a single site, use a platform checker.
Username reverse lookup and profile search
A reverse lookup uses the same search to show where a handle is in use. The same tool works the other way. A username reverse lookup, or username profile search, starts from a handle and shows where it is used. That is how a screen name lookup works too, since a screen name is just an older word for a username. If you want to search for a username, find a username's owner on a site, or search user names in bulk, see our reverse username lookup. Some people type it as username.lookup; same thing.
