WhatsApp Username Search: How WhatsApp Usernames Work
By David James · Published · 5 min read · Editorial policy
For most of its history, WhatsApp had one way to reach someone: their phone number. Usernames change that, but not in the way people expect. If you came here looking for a WhatsApp username search that finds people, the short answer is that WhatsApp is building usernames specifically so that it does not work that way.
This post covers what WhatsApp has announced, what you can actually do today, and how contacting someone by username is meant to work.
WhatsApp usernames can’t be checked with our username search. WhatsApp has no public profile page for a username, so there is nothing for our engine to look up. This guide explains how WhatsApp usernames work and how to use them inside the app.
What is live and what is still coming
WhatsApp opened username reservations at the end of June 2026. Being able to reserve a name and being able to use it are two separate stages, and they are easy to confuse.
| Stage | Status at the time of writing (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Reserving a username | Open, on recent versions of the app |
| Starting chats with someone by username | Announced, rolling out gradually by country |
| Searching or browsing for usernames | Not planned. WhatsApp says you cannot search for a username you do not already know |
| Signing up without a phone number | Not possible. A phone number is still required |
WhatsApp's own usernames FAQ still says, at the time of writing, that you can reserve a username now to use later this year when the feature launches. Press coverage describes messaging by username arriving country by country through the second half of 2026, with an in-app notice when it reaches you. We could not find an official WhatsApp page confirming it is live everywhere, so treat it as not yet available unless your app says otherwise.
Until it reaches you, the phone number remains the main way to start a WhatsApp chat.
What a WhatsApp username is
According to WhatsApp's FAQ, a username is an optional handle that lets people contact you without first seeing your phone number. The basics:
- Each account can have one username, and each username is unique.
- Usernames are 3 to 35 characters long and can use Latin letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
- The name does not have to match your real name.
- You can change it later, but WhatsApp limits how often, to prevent abuse.
- You still need a phone number to register and use WhatsApp.
Business accounts can use usernames too, but WhatsApp says a business's phone number will still be shown. Press reports also say WhatsApp is holding back some names for well-known people and organizations, and that businesses and creators can claim the username they already use on Facebook or Instagram.
How to reserve your username
Update WhatsApp to the latest version first. Press coverage places the option under Settings, then Account, then Username; the exact path may differ by device and region. Type the name you want and WhatsApp tells you if it is not available. The FAQ also mentions a username generator if you want suggestions.
If you already use one handle across other apps, it is worth checking that name before you reserve it. The FreeUsername username search looks up a single handle on 3,450+ sites in one go, free and with no sign-up, so you can see where else it is taken. A Not found result is a lead, not a guarantee. WhatsApp's own reservation screen is the final word for WhatsApp, and our tool does not check WhatsApp usernames.
How username search works on WhatsApp
This is the part that surprises people. WhatsApp's FAQ is direct: you cannot search for a username you do not already know. There is no public directory, and press reports say there are no autocomplete suggestions either. To contact someone by username for the first time, you need their exact username.
So in practice, "searching" on WhatsApp means typing a username that someone gave you. You will not get a list of people named Mia, and you cannot browse accounts with similar names.
The username key
WhatsApp adds an optional second layer called a username key. If you turn it on, someone needs both your exact username and your key before they can message you for the first time. You can reset the key at any time, which stops new people from reaching you with the old one. Think of it as a password for first contact, shared only with people you want to hear from.
When a stranger does message you, the FAQ mentions context such as groups you have in common, so you can decide whether to reply.
How this compares with Telegram
Telegram has had usernames for years, and they work the opposite way. A Telegram username is public, shows up in global search, and has a t.me link anyone can open. WhatsApp's design keeps usernames private by default: no search, no browsing, and an optional key on top. If you want to understand the Telegram side, read how to search Telegram by username.
Watch for lookalike usernames
Unique usernames do not stop lookalikes. A scammer can register mia.bank_support or swap a period for an underscore and hope you do not notice. Before you trust a username, confirm it with the person through a channel you already know is real, such as a phone call or an existing chat. For a business, check the username against its official website. Our digital footprint check can show where your own handle is already in use, which helps you spot impersonators early.
To find your other accounts or pick a consistent handle across apps, start at the platform checker hub. There is no WhatsApp checker there, since WhatsApp does not offer public username lookups.
