Discord Username vs ID, Profile Links and Account Age

Discord has more kinds of names and numbers than most apps. There is a username, a display name, server nicknames, and a user ID most people never see. Mix them up and you end up sending a friend request to the wrong person, or sharing a "profile link" that does not open anything.
This guide sorts them out, then covers the questions that come up once you know the difference: sharing your profile, adding links to messages, seeing which servers someone is in, tracking invites and checking how old an account is. Every step here comes from Discord's own help center or developer docs.
Is my username on Discord the same as an ID?
No. They are separate things that do different jobs.
| Username | User ID | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | mia.codes | 80351110224678912 (17 to 19 digits) |
| Can it change? | Yes, within Discord's limits | Never |
| Used for | Adding friends, recognising people | Bots, moderation logs, reports, profile links |
| Where you see it | On every profile card | Only after you turn on Developer Mode |
Your display name is a third thing: the friendly name shown in chats, which does not have to be unique. Our Discord username lookup guide explains usernames and display names in more detail.
Because the ID never changes, it is the reliable way to point at an account. If someone changes their username after harassing you, the ID in your report still identifies them. Moderators and bot developers use IDs for the same reason.
To see IDs, follow Discord's article Where can I find my User/Server/Message ID?:
- On desktop, open User Settings, go to Advanced and turn on Developer Mode. On mobile, tap your avatar, then the cogwheel, then Advanced under App Settings.
- Right-click a user on desktop and choose Copy User ID. On mobile, open their profile, tap the three dots in the top-right corner and choose Copy User ID.
To get your own ID, do the same on your own name or avatar.
Discord user ID lookup: from ID to username
To find a Discord ID, turn on Developer Mode (User Settings, then Advanced), right-click the person and choose Copy User ID. To go the other way, from a Discord ID to a username, paste discord.com/users/ plus the ID into Discord. If the account exists, the profile opens and shows the current username. Discord has no public directory that searches IDs, and third-party "Discord user ID lookup" sites only show what Discord exposes to bots. Our username search does not accept IDs.
How to share a Discord profile link
Discord does not give every account a public web page the way Instagram or X does. What works is a link built from the user ID:
https://discord.com/users/ followed by the ID, for example https://discord.com/users/80351110224678912.
Copy your ID as described above, add it to the end of that address, and share it. When someone signed in to Discord opens it, Discord shows your profile, and they can send a friend request if your privacy settings allow it. People who are not signed in will be asked to log in first, so it is not a public profile in the usual sense.
Often the simpler option is to share your username. Anyone can add you by typing it into Add Friend. If you want people to join a community rather than find you personally, share a server invite link instead.
Before you post your profile link or ID somewhere public, check your settings. Under Privacy & Safety in User Settings you can limit who can send you friend requests and DMs.
How to hyperlink in Discord
Discord supports masked links: clickable text that hides the full address. Discord's Markdown Text 101 article describes the format. Put the text in square brackets and the address in round brackets straight after it, with no space between them:
[our username guide](https://freeusername.com/blog/)
When you send the message, only "our username guide" shows, as a link. A few practical notes:
- Masked links work in messages. User feedback posted on Discord's support forum says they do not work in profile bios, so paste plain links there.
- If a link does not render, check for a missing bracket or a space between
]and(.
Be careful when you click masked links from strangers, too. The visible text can say anything, so hover over it on desktop to see the real address before you open it.
How to view what servers a Discord user is in
You can only see the servers you share with someone. Discord does not show anyone's full server list, and there is no setting or tool inside Discord that reveals servers you are not in yourself.
To see the overlap:
- Click the person's name or avatar in a server or DM to open their small profile card.
- Open their full profile from the card.
- Select the Mutual Servers tab. You will also see Mutual Friends.
The steps are the same on mobile, with taps in place of clicks. If the list is empty, you share no servers. If someone claims a website can list every server a user has joined, treat it as a red flag. Discord's Community Guidelines ban self-bots and scraping, and such sites often want you to log in with your Discord account.
How to see who invited who to a Discord server
This is a moderator tool, so you need the right permissions in the server. Discord's Members page article explains what admins can see.
- On desktop or in a browser, open the server and select Members at the top of the channel list. In servers that are not Community servers, it is under Server Settings, then User Management, then Members.
- Look at the join method for each member. With the Manage Server permission, you can see which invite code they used, or whether they came in through Server Discovery, a vanity URL, a bot invite or a Student Hub.
- To match an invite code to a person, open Server Settings and the Invites list, which shows each active invite with the member who created it and how many times it has been used.
Some limits. The Members page is desktop and browser only. Discord says a join method of "Unknown" means it does not have enough information. And if an invite has been deleted or has expired, it drops off the Invites list, so the code on someone's join record may no longer point to a creator. If tracking matters to your server, give each moderator or partner their own invite link.
How to check Discord account age
There are three ways, depending on whose account it is and what access you have.
From the profile. Open someone's full profile and look for a Member Since section. It shows the date the Discord account was created and, when you are viewing from a server, the date they joined that server. Staff replies on Discord's support forum confirm the Discord date is the account creation date, not the date of the first server joined.
From the user ID. Every Discord ID has its creation time built in. Discord's developer reference on snowflakes explains that the first part of the ID counts milliseconds since the start of 2015. In practice, a very new account has a very large ID. Developers can decode the exact date with the formula in the docs.
As a server admin. The Members page shows the age of each member's Discord account and lets you sort and filter by Joined Discord. It is useful for spotting a wave of brand-new accounts joining at once.
Account age is a handy safety signal. An account made last week that claims to be Discord staff, or that DMs you about a prize, deserves extra suspicion.
Server IDs work the same way as user IDs. Our guide to finding Discord servers shows how to use them.
How to search for people on Discord
Discord has no global search for users. You find people by exact username through Add Friend, through a server you both belong to, or through details they shared elsewhere. Our full walkthrough, how to find someone on Discord by username, covers each method and what to do when a friend request fails.
If you know someone's handle from another platform, the FreeUsername username search checks it across 3,450+ sites, which can turn up a public profile where they list their Discord. It is free and needs no sign-up. For Discord alone, the Discord username checker tells you whether a name is taken and lists the username rules.
