Discord Username Rules 2026: Length, Characters, Changes

This page sticks to what Discord itself publishes in its help-center article on new usernames and display names. Where Discord does not say something, we say so instead of guessing. Rules can change, so if the app tells you something different, trust the app.

Discord username rules at a glance

Rule	What Discord says
Length	At least 2 and at most 32 characters
Characters	Latin letters a to z, numbers 0 to 9, underscore and period
Capital letters	Not kept. Usernames are case-insensitive and forced to lowercase
Periods	Allowed, but not two in a row (a..b fails)
Uniqueness	One account per username
Changes	Up to 2 per week
Verification	Your account must be verified by email or phone to claim a new username

Rules last checked: October 2026, against Discord's help center.

You can test any name against these limits on the Discord username checker, which also asks Discord whether the name is already registered.

Which characters are allowed

Only four kinds: lowercase Latin letters, digits, the underscore and the period. That rules out:

• Spaces and hyphens
• Emoji and symbols such as @, #, ! or ~
• Letters with accents and non-Latin scripts such as Arabic, Cyrillic or Japanese

If you want any of those, put them in your display name instead. Discord does not limit display names to the same character set.

Username vs display name

	Username	Display name
Unique?	Yes	No
Characters	a-z, 0-9, _ and .	Most characters, including emoji and spaces
Used for	Adding friends, identifying the account	What people see in chat
Changes	Up to 2 per week	Any time

Servers can also give you a server nickname, which only shows inside that server. We have not found an official maximum length for display names or server nicknames in Discord's help center, so we leave that out here.

How often you can change it

Discord's article says up to two username changes per week. To change it on desktop, open User Settings, then My Account, and select Edit next to Username. On mobile, tap your profile, then Account, then Username. You may be asked for your password.

Discord does not publish how long an old username stays locked after you leave it, or whether someone else can grab it straight away. Assume a name you give up may be gone for good.

Names Discord refuses

Beyond the format rules, Discord does not allow usernames that:

• impersonate Discord, its staff or its system messages;
• impersonate another person, group or organization;
• attack others, promote hate or contain sexually explicit language.

Discord does not publish a list of reserved words. If a name passes the format rules but the app still refuses it, it may fall under one of these policies.

What happened to tags like #1234

Discord used to pair a non-unique name with a four-digit number. In 2023 it moved everyone to unique usernames and phased the numbers out. If you still see an old tag somewhere, it is from a cached page or an old screenshot. Our Discord username lookup guide explains how to find people under the new system.

Check a name before you switch

With only two changes a week, it is worth testing first. Use the Discord checker for Discord alone, or the full username search to see the same name across 3,450+ sites. FreeUsername.com is another free tool if you want a second check. Need ideas first? Try our Discord username ideas.

FAQ

What is the minimum length of a Discord username?

Two characters. The maximum is 32.

Can a Discord username have a space?

No. Use a period or underscore to separate words, or put spaces in your display name.

Can a Discord username start or end with a period?

Discord's examples show that .a.b. is fine, so yes. Only two periods in a row are blocked.

Why does Discord say my name is invalid?

Usually it has a character outside a-z, 0-9, _ and ., two periods in a row, or it is too long. If the format is fine, the name may break a content rule or already be taken.
