How to Find Someone on Snapchat by Username

Snapchat is built around adding people you already know, so it has fewer ways to browse for strangers than Instagram or X. That is deliberate. If you have someone's username, though, finding them is straightforward. This guide covers the add link, the in-app search, what a public profile shows, and how Snapchat's once-a-year username rule affects all of it.
Key takeaways
- Open
snapchat.com/add/usernameor search the name in Add Friends. Use the username, not the display name. - Private profiles show little more than the name and avatar to non-friends. No legitimate tool shows private Snaps.
- You can change your username once a year, so old add links can stop working.
- A "Not found" on a web check is not proof a name is free. The rename screen in the app is the final test.
A Snapchat username is the unique handle tied to one account. It is what goes in the profile link and what friends type to add you. Your display name is separate and does not have to be unique.
Use the add link
The quickest way to reach a Snapchat account from outside the app is its web link. The older format, snapchat.com/add/username, still works and now forwards to the newer one, snapchat.com/@username. Say a friend tells you their Snapchat is nightowl92. Type snapchat.com/add/nightowl92 on your phone, and Snapchat opens the profile with an Add button. On a laptop the same link shows a web page only if nightowl92 has a public profile. If it shows nothing, search nightowl92 in Add Friends instead. On a phone with Snapchat installed, either link opens the profile in the app with an Add button. On a computer, it shows the public web profile if the account has one.
A few details make this more reliable:
- Use the username, not the display name. Display names can contain spaces and do not have to be unique, so they will not work in a link.
- Snapchat usernames start with a letter, end with a letter or number, and contain only letters, numbers and at most one of
-,_or.. If the name you were given breaks those rules, it is spelled wrong. - The web page mostly covers public profiles. A regular private account may not have a page there, so a missing web page does not mean the person is not on Snapchat.
Search in Add Friends
Yes, you can search a username inside the app from Add Friends. Tap the Add Friends icon (a person with a plus sign) and type into the search bar. Snapchat's help center says you can find people by their Display Name or their latest username, so a first name or nickname can work too. Tap a result to open the profile, check it is the right person, then tap Add.
The person you add decides whether to add you back. Depending on their settings, you may not be able to send them Snaps until they do. Snapchat also offers other ways in, such as scanning someone's Snapcode, which is often easier when you are standing next to them.
Because display names repeat and anyone can pick any photo, look at the username under each result before adding. Fake accounts that copy a real person's name and picture with a slightly different username are a common scam on Snapchat, especially accounts posing as someone you know and asking for money or login codes.
What public profiles show
A public profile shows a bio, Stories and Spotlight videos to anyone. A private profile shows almost nothing to people who are not friends.
| What a non-friend sees | Private profile | Public profile |
|---|---|---|
| Display name, username, Bitmoji or photo | Yes | Yes |
| Bio | No | Yes |
| Public Stories, Spotlight, highlights | No | Yes |
| Web page at snapchat.com/@username | May not exist | Usually |
| Can subscribe without being friends | No | Yes |
Snapchat has two kinds of profiles. Most people have a private profile that only friends see in full. Creators, brands and some regular users also have a public profile, which can show a bio, public Stories, Spotlight videos and saved highlights to anyone. Public profiles can be subscribed to without being friends, and they are the ones you are most likely to see on the web at snapchat.com/@username.
A private profile reveals very little to people who are not friends: typically the display name, username and Bitmoji or profile picture. That is how Snapchat is meant to work, and there is no legitimate way around it. Apps or sites that claim to show you someone's private Snaps or location are not to be trusted and often exist to collect your password.
How username changes work
You can change your Snapchat username once a year. Snapchat used to make usernames permanent. Now you can change yours, but not often. At the time of writing, Snapchat Support's article on changing your username says you can do it once a year, meaning 12 months to the day since your last change. The same article sets the rules for a valid name: 3 to 15 characters, Latin letters and numbers plus one of -, _ or ., starting with a letter and ending with a letter or number, and never including or being a phone number.
The steps run through Settings: open My Account, tap Username under Change My Info, then Change Username, enter the new name and confirm with your password. Snap Stars, the verified creator accounts, have to use a request form instead.
The once-a-year limit shapes how you search, too. When someone renames, the old username stops leading to them, and friends find them by display name or new username instead. If an add link you saved from last year no longer works, that may be why.
Your display name is the flexible one. It can be changed any time and does not have to be unique, so if you just want a different name to show in chats, change that and keep the username.
Snapchat username search without the app
You can do a Snapchat username lookup free in any browser: open snapchat.com/add/username. If the account exists, you will see its display name and Snapcode, plus more if it has a public profile. A reverse Snapchat username lookup, meaning finding who is behind a handle, is not something Snapchat offers. What you can do is take the same handle and check whether it appears on other sites with a username search. A match there could be someone else, so look for links between the profiles before you assume.
Checking a name before you commit
Check a new name in a checker first, then confirm it on Snapchat's rename screen. Since you will live with the new name for a year, check it properly. Our Snapchat username checker looks up the public profile page and lists the rules next to the result. Because private accounts may not have a public page, a "Not found" there is not proof the name is free. The rename screen in Settings is the only definitive test.
It also helps to check the same name elsewhere so your handles match. You can search one username across 3,450+ sites, up to five names per search, free and without signing up. Results come back as Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown, and they are leads to confirm by hand rather than final answers. The username is sent to our server only to run the check and is not stored or logged.
