Steam and Roblox Username Lookup: How to Find a Player

Free, no sign-up. Checks 3,450+ sites; the username is not stored or logged.
Looking up a player on Steam or Roblox is confusing for the same reason on both platforms: each one gives an account more than one name, and only some of them are searchable. Type the wrong one and you get nothing, or a page of strangers with the same nickname.
Below is which name is which on each platform, how to find a player with the tools Steam and Roblox provide, and how to check whether a name you want is free.
Steam has three names, and two of them are public
A Steam account carries three different names, and mixing them up is the most common reason a lookup fails.
| Name | Who sees it | Unique? | Can it change? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account name | Only the owner, at sign-in | Yes | No, not even through Steam Support |
| Profile name | Everyone, in friends lists and games | No | Any time, in Edit Profile |
| Custom URL | Everyone, as steamcommunity.com/id/name | Yes | Yes, and it is optional |
The account name is private. You will not find a player by it, and you should not try. What friends see is the profile name, which can be anything and does not have to be unique. Many players set it to a joke or change it often. The custom URL is the only name that is both public and unique, which makes it the most reliable thing to search for.
How to find someone on Steam
Start with whatever the person gave you.
- A custom URL. Type
steamcommunity.com/id/plus the name into your browser. If a profile loads, that is the account. If Steam says the profile could not be found, nobody uses that custom URL right now. - A profile name. In the Steam client, open Friends, then Add a Friend, and search for the name. You can also use the user search on Steam Community. Expect many matches for common names, since profile names are not unique. Compare avatars and recent activity with what you know before sending a request.
- A friend code. If a name search turns up too many results, ask the person to send you their friend code from their own Add a Friend page. Typing that code finds them directly, and it only works because they chose to share it.
If a player's profile is set to private or friends only, you will see little more than their name and avatar. That is their choice. The right next step is a friend request or asking a mutual friend, not a workaround.
To test whether a custom URL is free before you set your own, use the Steam username checker. It looks up steamcommunity.com/id/name and explains why a free custom URL tells you nothing about account names. Steam's own support article on SteamID and account names covers what can and cannot be changed.
Roblox: username vs display name
Roblox has two names, and the split is cleaner than Steam's.
- The username is the unique account identifier. You sign in with it, and changing it costs Robux.
- The display name is the label shown in experiences and on the profile. It is free to change and does not have to be unique, so two players can show the same display name.
When a friend says "add me, I'm Nova", ask for the username, not the display name. The display name alone may match dozens of players.
How to find someone on Roblox
On roblox.com or in the app, use the search bar and choose People. Search for the exact username. An exact match is the account you want; similar names around it are other players.
Roblox search has one feature most platforms lack. According to Roblox Support's page on changing your username, a player's previous usernames can be viewed in Settings, on the profile and through People search, and other players can see past usernames through People search. So if a friend renamed, searching their old username can still lead you to the right profile.
The flip side applies to you. If you rename to put an old name behind you, other players can still find the old one through People search. Roblox Support also says that when you submit a right to be forgotten request, your past usernames are permanently retired and cannot be reused.
Before you pay for a Roblox username change
Roblox charges Robux for each username change, and the price appears at checkout when you rename. The path is Settings, then Account Info, then the pencil icon next to your username, followed by your password and the Buy button. Roblox Support lists a few limits worth knowing first:
- You cannot take a name that belongs to another account.
- You cannot swap usernames with your own alt account.
- Small edits such as changing capitalization are not discounted.
- Changing back to a past username still costs Robux.
Because a failed idea costs real Robux, test the name first with the Roblox username checker. It runs the same kind of validation the sign-up form uses, so it can catch names that are filtered as well as names that are taken. If all you want is a different look, change your display name instead, since that is free.

Steam profile search and Roblox player search in a browser
For a Steam profile search, open steamcommunity.com/id/ followed by the custom URL name, or use Steam Community search, which matches profile names. For a Roblox player search, type the name into the search bar on roblox.com and choose People, or open a profile link directly. Both platforms only show what the player has made public.
Checking one gamer tag on every platform
Gamers often want one tag across Steam, Roblox, Discord, Twitch and the console networks. Rather than test each site by hand, search one username across 3,450+ sites with FreeUsername. It is free, needs no sign-up, and checks up to five usernames per search. Each site comes back as Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown. Treat those as leads: open anything that matters, and remember that the platform's own sign-up or rename screen is final.
A match on two sites does not mean the same person owns both. Short gamer tags get reused constantly by unrelated players. The reverse username lookup page explains how to read matches without jumping to conclusions, and the checker hub covers platforms like Twitch and Xbox individually.
FreeUsername is not affiliated with Valve, Steam or Roblox. Platform names are trademarks of their owners.
