Verifying sources by username: a guide for journalists
A source who reaches out through a social account might be exactly who they say. They might also be a new account made last week to push a story. A source's username is one of the quickest things to check: real people tend to leave a trail under their handle, while throwaway accounts usually don't. Here is how to use a search across 3,450+ sites as one step in source verification.
Free, no sign-up. Up to five usernames, 3,450+ sites. The username is not stored or logged.
The verification problem
Breaking news brings a rush of eyewitnesses, insiders and self-described experts, and some of them are not real. Sockpuppet accounts, impersonators of public figures and coordinated groups posting the same claim all show up when a story is moving fast. A blue check or a high follower count is not proof of identity, and on some platforms neither is hard to get.
The question you want answered early is simple: does this person have a history that fits the story they are telling? Someone who says they are a nurse in Ohio and has a five-year-old forum account under the same handle discussing shifts at a hospital is more credible than a two-day-old profile with no trail at all.
How a username search helps
Enter the source's handle, or paste their profile URL, and the tool checks it on 3,450+ sites. Each site comes back as Found, Not found, Blocked or Unknown. Treat every one of them as a lead to verify, not a verdict. Found results come with public profile details where the site provides them, such as display name, bio and avatar, so you can compare them against what the source told you.
Consistency is the signal. The same avatar, the same bio wording, or links between profiles all suggest one person behind them. Mismatches are worth asking about. You can check up to five handles at once, which helps when a source uses slight variants. Export the results as JSON or CSV to keep a record of what you checked and when. The reverse username lookup page explains how to read a handle's footprint in more depth.
Step by step
- Note the handle and how the source reached you. Record the username, platform, profile URL and the date of first contact before anything changes.
- Run the handle and close variants. Search the exact handle plus variants with underscores, dots or numbers. Up to five in one search.
- Compare profiles against the claims. Open each Found profile. Check whether the location, job, photos and timeline line up with what the source told you. Note account age where the site shows it.
- Ask the source to confirm. Ask the source to confirm the account through a second channel, such as a work email, a known phone number or a call. Only ask for a public post if it can’t put a confidential or vulnerable source at risk. Verification works best in both directions.
- Document your checks. Export the results, add screenshots, and write down which signals supported or weakened the identity. Your editor will want to see it.
Frequently asked questions
Can this tool confirm a source is who they say they are?
No tool can do that alone. It shows where the same handle has public profiles, which you then compare against the source story and confirm through other channels.
What does it mean if a source has no other accounts?
Not much on its own. Some people only use one platform, and some deliberately use different handles for privacy. Treat a missing trail as a reason to verify another way, not as proof of a fake.
Does the source know I searched their username?
The tool does not contact or notify anyone. It requests public profile pages for the handle, and the username is not stored or logged on our side.
Can I check an email address a source used?
Not yet. The email check is coming soon. For now, search the username part only if you have reason to think the source uses it as a handle.
Should I keep the results?
Yes. Export JSON or CSV and keep it with your notes. Profiles change after a story runs, and a dated record helps with corrections and legal review.
