Best Username Search Engines in 2026 (Free and Paid Compared)
By David James · Published · 6 min read · Editorial policy
Free, no sign-up. Checks 3,450+ sites; the username is not stored or logged.
A username search engine takes one handle and checks it against many websites at once. That sounds like one job, but the tools that do it are built for different people. Some are made for creators who want to know if a name is free. Some are made for researchers who want to know where an account exists. A few are really people-search sites that happen to accept a username.
This comparison covers the main options in 2026, including our own tool, FreeUsername. We have tried to be fair. Where we could not confirm a detail on a competitor's live site, we say so and mark it unverified. Counts and features change often, so check each tool yourself before you rely on it. All product names belong to their respective owners, and we are not affiliated with any of them.
What makes a username search engine good
- Coverage. How many sites it checks, and whether those include the platforms you care about.
- Clear failures. Many sites block automated checks. A good tool tells you when it could not get an answer instead of guessing.
- Result detail. A bare "taken" is less useful than a link plus the profile's display name and avatar, which help you tell your account from a stranger's.
- Export. CSV or JSON matters if you are auditing many accounts or keeping records.
- Domains. Brand builders usually want to know about the matching domain too.
- Price and privacy. Whether it is free, needs an account, and what happens to the name you type.
Comparison at a glance
| Tool | Approx. sites | Result detail | Export | Domain check | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FreeUsername | 3,450+ | Found / Not found / Blocked / Unknown, plus name, avatar, bio | JSON, CSV | 7 TLDs via RDAP | Free, no sign-up |
| WhatsMyName web tool (whatsmyname.app) | About 700+ | Site, category, link | CSV, PDF | No | Free |
| Sherlock (open-source CLI) | About 400+ | Found URLs | Text, CSV and more | No | Free, self-run |
| Maigret (open-source CLI) | Large list (see its README) | Found URLs, some profile data | Several report formats | No | Free, self-run |
| Namechk | 100+ social | Available / taken | None found | About 36 TLDs | Free |
| KnowEm | 500+ social (unverified) | Available / taken (unverified) | Unverified | Yes (unverified) | Free search, paid services |
| Instant Username Search | About 70+ | Available / taken | Unverified | About 12 TLDs | Free |
| NameCheckup | 270+ (secondary sources) | Available / taken / invalid | None found | 40+ TLDs | Free |
| UserSearch.org | Varies by depth mode | Hits across many categories | Unverified | WHOIS module | Freemium |
Site counts come from each tool's own site or documentation where we could read it, and from secondary write-ups where we could not. They were checked in October 2026.
FreeUsername (our tool)
Best for: wide coverage with clear statuses, for both self-audits and name availability.
We check 3,450+ sites with our own search engine, using a detection rule we wrote for each site. We are an independent tool, not part of the WhatsMyName, Sherlock or Maigret projects. Results stream in live with four statuses, so a site that blocked the check shows as Blocked rather than as a false "available". Found results include the public display name, avatar, and bio when the site provides them. You can search up to five usernames at once, export to JSON or CSV, and check .com, .net, .org, .io, .us, .app, and .dev domains through public RDAP data.
It is free with no sign-up, and the username is sent to our server only to run the check. It is not stored or logged. Try it with your own handle.
Limits: results are leads to verify, like every tool here. We do not search by real name, email, or phone (by design), and we do not offer PDF reports or a public API.
The WhatsMyName project's web tool
Best for: OSINT researchers who want the project's own curated dataset and category filters.
The WhatsMyName project, started by Micah Hoffman, maintains the community dataset that many tools use. Its README points to a web interface at whatsmyname.app, run with OSINT Combine. It offers category filters, an NSFW toggle, and CSV and PDF export. Its coverage is the project's own list, so it checks fewer sites than tools that merge several datasets, but every site in it is curated by that community.
Sherlock and Maigret
Best for: technical users who want to run checks on their own machine.
Both are free, open-source command-line tools. Sherlock is simple and widely used. Maigret, a fork of Sherlock, adds a larger site list and can pull some profile details into reports. You install them with Python and run them in a terminal, which gives you control over proxies, timeouts, and batch runs. Some third-party services wrap them in a web interface, usually with an account and usage credits. If you are comfortable in a terminal, both work well. If not, a web tool is easier.
Namechk, KnowEm, Instant Username Search and NameCheckup
Best for: creators and brands checking whether a name is free.
These tools answer a narrower question: can I register this name? They show a grid of platform logos marked available or taken, and most add domain checks.
- Namechk checks 100+ social sites and around 36 domain extensions, with links to WHOIS details.
- KnowEm is known for checking 500+ social sites plus domains and US trademarks, and sells paid manual registration services. We could not load its site during our research, so these details come from secondary sources and are unverified.
- Instant Username Search shows results as you type for roughly 70+ platforms plus about 12 domain extensions. It is fast and simple.
- NameCheckup covers 40+ domain extensions and flags names that break a platform's username rules before you try to register them.
Two-state results have one weakness: if a platform blocks the check, the tool may not be able to tell you, so a name can look available when it is not. Always confirm by trying to register on the platforms you care about. We go deeper on these in Namechk, KnowEm and Instant Username Search alternatives.
People-search sites that accept usernames
Some sites, such as UserSearch.org and IDCrawl, sit closer to people search. They combine username checks with email, phone, or real-name lookups, and some push paid upgrades. These are a different category. They raise more privacy questions, and in the US, any service used for decisions about employment, housing, credit, or insurance falls under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. We explain why we stick to usernames in social media search by username or name.
Which one should you use?
- Checking your own digital footprint: a wide-coverage tool with profile details. Start with the digital footprint checker.
- Picking a new handle or brand name: any availability tool works, and the name checker adds domains and four-status results. For a single platform, see the platform checkers.
- Authorized OSINT work: combine a web tool with Sherlock or Maigret, and read our OSINT username search page and username OSINT for beginners.
- Figuring out where a handle you know is used: see reverse username lookup.

Whatever you use, verify
No username search engine is perfect. Sites redesign their pages, block automated traffic, and reserve names. Treat every result as a lead: open the profile, check that it is what you think it is, and remember that the same handle on two sites does not mean the same person owns both. Our guide explains how to read results, and the full site list shows exactly what we check.
Use these tools for legitimate purposes: your own accounts, your brand, or research you are authorized to do. To compare for yourself, run a free search.
