Namechk, KnowEm and Instant Username Search Alternatives

Free, no sign-up. Checks 3,450+ sites; the username is not stored or logged.
If you have ever tried to claim the same name across social networks, you have probably used Namechk, KnowEm, Instant Username Search, or CheckUserNames. They are some of the best-known username availability checkers, and they answer one question well: is this name free to register?
Key takeaways
- Namechk, Instant Username Search and NameCheckup answer one question: is a name free to register?
- KnowEm and CheckUserNames did not load properly when we checked in October 2026.
- FreeUsername checks about 3,450 sites, shows Blocked and Unknown results, and exports CSV or JSON.
- For trademarks or many domain extensions, another tool or the USPTO database fits better.
A username availability checker is a tool that tells you whether a handle is still free to register on a set of sites.
Sometimes you need more than that. You might want to check far more sites, see why a check failed, export your results, or audit where a handle is already in use. This post compares what those tools check and when an alternative makes sense. We looked at each tool's live site in October 2026 where we could reach it, and we note where we had to rely on secondary sources.
How we checked: we loaded each tool's homepage in October 2026 and read the site counts it states about itself. Where a site did not load, we used its archived homepage and marked the figure unverified. We did not measure the accuracy of any tool's results.
Trademark note: Namechk, KnowEm, Instant Username Search, CheckUserNames, Namecheckr and NameCheckup are trademarks or names of their respective owners. FreeUsername is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of them.
What these tools do well
They answer the availability question quickly for the biggest networks. The site counts below are what each tool says about itself.
- Namechk says it checks a username across 100+ social platforms and about 36 domain extensions, shown as a grid of available and taken results, with links to domain WHOIS details. Full Namechk comparison.
- KnowEm is known for checking 500+ social sites, 150+ domain extensions, and US trademarks, and it sells paid services where its team registers profiles for you. These figures come from its own archived homepage: as of October 2026, knowem.com does not load at all. What happened to KnowEm.
- Instant Username Search shows results as you type for roughly 70+ platforms plus about 12 domain extensions. It is quick and simple. Instant Username Search compared.
- CheckUserNames is one of the older checkers. Its archived homepage describes it as a KnowEm site covering 160 social networks. As of October 2026 it returns a server error. CheckUsernames details.
- NameCheckup and Namecheckr follow the same availability model. NameCheckup stands out for covering 40+ domain extensions and flagging names that break a platform's username rules (NameCheckup). Namecheckr shows a holding page instead of its checker as of October 2026 (Namecheckr).
For a quick "is this handle free on the big networks?" check, any of them is a reasonable choice.
Why people look for an alternative
People look for an alternative when they need more coverage, more detail or an export. People searching for a "namechk alternative", a "knowem alternative", or a general username finder usually hit one of these limits:
- Coverage. 70 to 500 sites leaves out many forums, gaming networks, coding sites, and niche communities where a name can already be taken.
- Two states only. Available or taken. If a platform blocks the check, an availability tool may not be able to say so, and a blocked check can look like a free name.
- No detail. "Taken" does not tell you whether the account is an abandoned profile from 2014 or an active creator in your niche.
- No export. Hard to keep records or work through results in a spreadsheet.
- The opposite question. Sometimes the question is "where am I already using it?" That is a self-audit, and availability checkers aren't built for it.
Side-by-side comparison
The main differences are site count, result states and export.

How FreeUsername differs
It checks where a name is free and where it is already used, in one search. We built FreeUsername to answer both questions in one place: where is this name free, and where is it already used?
- 3,450+ sites. Every site runs through our own search engine, with a detection rule we wrote and test ourselves. We are an independent tool. Browse the full site list.
- Four statuses. Blocked and Unknown are shown as such, so you know which checks to confirm by hand.
- Profile details. For Found results we show the public display name, avatar, and bio when available, which helps you judge whether a taken name is actually in use.
- Up to five names at once, so you can compare
yourbrand, yourbrandhq, andgetyourbrandside by side. - Domains for .com, .net, .org, .io, .us, .app, and .dev, checked through public RDAP data.
- JSON and CSV export.
- Free, no sign-up. The username is sent to our server only to run the check and is not stored or logged.
A quick example. Say you are thinking of nightowl92 for a new channel. You enter nightowl92, nightowl92hq and getnightowl92 together. Our engine checks each one against about 3,450 sites from your request. If nightowl92 is Found on a few major platforms with active profiles, you move to a variant. If one comes back Blocked, you open that site's signup page and test the name there. Instagram and Threads are not checked automatically, so follow our manual guides for those. Then you export the CSV and claim the free names.
Try it with a name you are considering: check a username across 3,450+ sites, or use the name checker if you are focused on brand availability.
Where the others may still be a better fit
Another tool fits better for done-for-you signups, many domain extensions or trademark pointers:
- You want a done-for-you service. KnowEm's paid registration packages do the signup work for you. We only check.
- You need lots of domain extensions. NameCheckup and Namechk check more TLDs than we do, and KnowEm is reported to check many more.
- You want a trademark pointer. Some of these tools surface trademark information. We do not, so search the USPTO's trademark database directly for that.
- You want instant results on a short list. Instant Username Search's as-you-type model is very fast for the biggest platforms.
- You want per-platform rule checks. NameCheckup flags names that are invalid on a given platform, which avoids a class of false "available" results.
Checking one platform at a time
For one network, a single-platform page is quicker. If you only care about one network, a focused page is quicker. We have platform checkers such as the Instagram username checker, plus pages for TikTok, YouTube, X, Twitch, Roblox, and more on the platform checker hub. Each one explains that platform's username rules alongside the live check.
Tips that apply whichever tool you use
Whatever tool you use, confirm on the signup form and claim names in one go.
- Confirm before you commit. The signup form is the final word. Some platforms reserve names or block recently deleted ones.
- Click through on "taken". An empty, years-old profile is a different situation from an active account. Some platforms have inactive-username policies.
- Claim everything in one sitting. Once a name is free where you need it, register it everywhere, even on platforms you will not use yet. See protecting your brand name across social media.
- Keep it consistent. A small variation used everywhere beats a different handle on each site. Our guide to choosing a unique username has ideas.

Responsible use
Use these checks for your own names and brands. Availability checkers are for names you want to use. If you are checking where a handle is already in use, keep it to your own accounts, your brand, or research you are authorized to do. Results are leads to verify, and FreeUsername is not a consumer reporting agency.
