Threads profiles are created from an Instagram account, so the two apps share the same username pool and inactive-name policy. You can now use a Threads username that differs from your Instagram one, but some features expect them to match. Check a name below or use it as a Threads username search.

What we tested (October 2026)

How the check works: We no longer query Threads. Meta's robots.txt does not allow automated collection without permission, so our result always says Unknown with an "open it to verify" note and never counts as Found.
Results across our 60 test handles: 0 Found, 12 Not found and 48 Blocked or Unknown. 0 of 10 common names such as johndoe showed as taken, against 0 of 50 random made-up handles. The check never returned Found, even for common names, so a Not found here is weak evidence. Average response: 0.3 s.
Logged-out view: A known profile returned HTTP 200 logged out, but our plain request got a script shell with a bot check.
Change on 14 October 2026: We stopped requesting Threads profile pages. The old rule could never return Found anyway. To check a handle, open threads.com/@name in your browser; a name with no profile redirects to the login page.

Threads username rules

Link to Instagram	A Threads profile is connected to the Instagram account you log in with, in the same Meta Account.
Matching names	Using a different Threads username turns off the Threads badge on Instagram, sharing Instagram and Facebook posts to Threads, and the Meta Verified badge on Threads.

Inactive names	Threads and Instagram share one inactive username policy and do not hand out names from accounts that look inactive.

How to search for someone on Threads by username

Every public profile lives at threads.com/@name, so the fastest search is to open that link. In the app, the search tab finds people by username or name. Because Threads and Instagram share names, instagram.com/name is worth a look too.

We do not query Threads automatically, since Meta's robots.txt does not allow it. Our result is "Unknown" with a link, so you check it by hand. This page never looks up real names.

Enter the name without the @. Threads uses the same character set as Instagram: letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

For a hand check, open threads.com/@<name> in a browser. If Threads says the profile is not available, no public profile uses it.
Also check instagram.com/<name>/: a name taken on Instagram is usually taken on Threads too, since the pools are linked.

Threads username taken? What you can do

If you own the Instagram name already, keep the same name on Threads to keep the badge, cross-posting and Meta Verified working.
Try the variations Instagram suggests for taken names: periods, underscores, numbers or abbreviations.
Report impersonating accounts and trademark misuse with the same Instagram and Threads reporting tools.

How to change your Threads username

In the Threads app, go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
Tap your username and enter the new one.
Review the warning about features that need matching usernames, then save.

Reserved and restricted names

Threads follows Instagram's rules on impersonation and trademarks: names that pretend to be another person or brand can be removed, and trademark owners can report infringing usernames on either app.

Tips

Changing your Instagram username can change your Threads username as well if they are shared, so plan both together.
Businesses running Threads ads should keep the names matched until the ads change reaches their account.
Log in regularly; both apps encourage active use to keep the account clear of the inactive username policy.

Can I view a Threads profile without an account?

Public Threads profiles open at threads.com/@name in a browser, though Meta may ask you to sign in after a few views. We stopped checking Threads automatically on 14 October 2026, so open that address yourself: a name with no profile redirects to the login page.

Can my Threads username be different from my Instagram username?

Yes, but some features stop working: the Threads badge, sharing posts from Instagram or Facebook, the Meta Verified badge on Threads and the paid partnership tool.

If an Instagram name is taken, is it taken on Threads too?

Usually, because Threads profiles are built on Instagram accounts. Check both before deciding.

Can I get a Threads name from an inactive account?
