Etsy has three names: a username that can never change, a shop name for sellers, and a preferred name on your profile. The username appears in etsy.com/people/name. This page builds that profile link for an Etsy username search, and the rules below cover shop names too.

Etsy username rules

Username changes	You cannot change your Etsy username, and it is public.
Profile link	Your username is in your profile address: etsy.com/people/username.
Shop name length	Up to 20 characters, with no spaces or punctuation.
Shop name changes	Unlimited before the shop opens; up to 5 times after opening, then Etsy Support must approve.
Used shop names	A shop name used on an open shop cannot be used again, even after that shop closes.

How to search for someone on Etsy by username

If you know the username, open etsy.com/people/name while signed out. Etsy's own search covers items and shops rather than members: its Help Center says to search a shop by name or open etsy.com/shop/shopname. A seller's shop name and username are often different, so try both.

Enter the username you want to look up, as it would appear in etsy.com/people/<name>.

For a shop name, visit etsy.com/shop/<name> as well; shop names and usernames are separate, and a free username does not mean the shop name is free.

Etsy username taken? What you can do

Since usernames cannot be changed, put your brand into the shop name instead, which you can edit.
For shop names, use capitals to separate words (MiaMakesCandles) because spaces and punctuation are not allowed.
If you hold rights to a shop name someone else uses, Etsy suggests contacting the member first, or filing an intellectual property notice. Filing does not free up the name for you.
A shop name you used on an old account stays locked; reopen that shop instead of trying to reuse the name.

How to change your Etsy username

Usernames cannot be changed. To change your shop name, go to Shop Manager, then Settings, then Your shop.
Under Shop name, select Edit, enter the new name and select Save.
To change your preferred name, use Account settings, then Edit public profile on a browser (not the app).

Reserved and restricted names

Shop names cannot contain profanity, cannot already be in use, and must not infringe someone else's trademark. Once a shop name has been used on an open shop, Etsy retires it for everyone, even after the shop closes.

Tips

Changing a shop name redirects old links to the new one and shows a notice to buyers for 45 days.
Capitalization changes and returning to a previous shop name do not count against the 5-change limit.
Keep your username neutral; it is public and permanent, while the shop name carries your brand.
