Fortnite Name Checker

No automatic check for Fortnite. We can't check Fortnite automatically, so this page is a guide: follow the steps to check a name in Fortnite itself. Search the other 3,450+ sites.

The name other players see over your character, in your party and in match feeds is your Epic Games display name. Fortnite has no separate in-game name. This page is about how that name works inside Fortnite: where it shows up, how friends find you, and what to pick. We can't check Fortnite names automatically. Epic has no public profile page, and the stats site in our dataset blocks automated checks, so the manual steps are below.

Fortnite name rules

Length	3 to 16 characters.
Uniqueness	A display name that another Epic Games account already uses cannot be taken.
Not allowed	Vulgarity, hate speech or offensive language; direct references to Epic Games employees, products, services or characters; private details such as phone numbers, addresses or real names.
Change frequency	Once every two weeks. A verified email address is required.
Console names	Changing your Epic display name does not change your PlayStation or Xbox name.

Fortnite name vs Epic display name

They are the same name. Renaming in Fortnite means renaming your Epic account, and it changes everywhere Epic shows your name. For the account side (settings, the two-week cooldown and other Epic games), see our Epic Games display name guide.

How to search for someone on Fortnite by username

Fortnite players are found by Epic display name. Epic's help center says to open the lobby, select your profile icon, choose the Add Friends icon, type the display name and send a request. The Epic Games Launcher and mobile app also accept part of a name and show matches.

Epic has no public profile link by name, and the stats site in our dataset blocks our server, so our result needs checking by hand. This page does not look up real names or emails.

How to check if a Fortnite name is available: step-by-step checklist

How to check a Fortnite name

Enter the display name. Under 3 or over 16 characters cannot be an Epic display name.
Our dataset checks the name on Fortnite Tracker, a third-party stats site. In our October 2026 test it answered every request from our server with HTTP 403, so we no longer query it. The result is always "Unknown" with a note to check by hand.
A stats site only lists players whose matches it has tracked, so even when it loads, a missing name there does not prove the name is free.
The real test: sign in at epicgames.com, open Account settings, and try the name in the Display name box. Epic tells you straight away if another account has it.

Fortnite name taken? What you can do

Add a playstyle word or a short number: MiaClutch, Mia_Builds, Mia2K.
Check again in a couple of weeks. Other players can rename every two weeks, so a name you want may be released.
Skip account sellers. Epic's terms forbid buying, selling or sharing accounts, and you could lose the account and the name.
Leave skin and character names out. Epic rejects references to its characters and can swap your name for a random one.

How to change your Fortnite name

Verify your email address on your Epic Games account if you have not already.
Sign in at epicgames.com and open Account settings (Personal details).
Select the edit button next to Display name, type the new name and select Continue, then confirm.
A lock icon means you changed it in the last two weeks; hover over the info icon to see when you can change it again.

Reserved and restricted names

Epic blocks names that reference its employees, products, services or characters, plus offensive names and names with private information. A name that breaks the rules can be reset to a random one; you cannot return to the reset name, and the two-week cooldown still applies. Appeals go through Epic's safety and sanctions page.

Tips

Keep it short and easy to read. Teammates have to say it out loud in voice chat and type it to add you.
On PlayStation or Xbox, some players may see your console name instead. Renaming on Epic leaves your console name as it was.
Don't use your real name. Strangers in every lobby will see it, and Epic bans private details in names anyway.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a Fortnite name be?

3 to 16 characters, the same limit as any Epic Games display name.

How often can I change my Fortnite name?

Once every two weeks, and only with a verified email address on your Epic account.

Why can't this page tell me if a Fortnite name is free?

Epic has no public profile page to look up, and the third-party stats site in our dataset blocks automated checks. Epic's own display name field in Account settings is the only reliable test.

Can I do a Fortnite username lookup here?

Only partly. You can type a name, but the result is Unknown, so check by hand. The search steps are in the section above.

Why did my Fortnite name turn into random text?

Epic replaced it because it broke a naming rule. That old name is gone for good, but you can appeal on Epic's sanctions and appeals page.

Why do some players see a different name for me?

Players on consoles may see your PlayStation or Xbox name rather than your Epic display name. Renaming on Epic does not change the console name.
